State of Darkness: A Dance by Molissa Fenley

Molissa Fenley created her seminal work, State of Darkness in 1988. Recently, it was live-streamed from New York’s Joyce Theater, seven separate performances, each with a different dancer. Molissa recreated the work at The Dance Hub with the support of an AD&M Rent Subsidy Grant. In the interview, she talks about this work. She also shares her wisdom, as well as some fun stories from her far reaching and exceptional continuing career as an American modern dance choreographer and performer. We also show the Joyce Theater performance of State of Darkness in 1990 featuring Molissa Fenley.

During class I love how the outside world fades away. It’s pure focus and concentration, enjoying the movement and the music, especially when Eric plays for us.

After class I am exhausted in the best possible way - yet energized, happy and satisfied at the same time. Also sad that the 90 minutes are over!
